Tips for Emailing College Coaches

  • Do Your Research: Address the coach by name (e.g., "Dear Coach Smith,"). Mention something specific about their program or school that interests you.
  • Be Professional: Use a clear and concise subject line (e.g., "Swimming Prospect - [Your Name] - Class of 20[XX]"). Proofread carefully for any typos or grammatical errors.
  • Keep it Concise: Coaches are busy. Get to the point while providing essential information.
  • Include Key Information: Your name, graduation year, high school, GPA, test scores (if good), club team, and best times are crucial.
  • Highlight Progress: Mentioning recent improvements, like "all my best times are from this past year," is a great idea.
  • Consider Attachments (Sparingly): You might attach a more detailed swimming resume or unofficial transcript, but don't overload the email with large files initially. Mention attachments in the email body.
  • Follow Up (Appropriately): If you don't hear back after a reasonable time (e.g., 1-2 weeks), it's okay to send a polite follow-up email.
  • Talk to Your MAC Coach: Before sending emails, discuss your list of schools and your approach with Coach Meg. They can offer valuable insights and assistance.
